UTOPIA: Kiara Mohamed

Our first Utopia commission introduces kiara Mohamed a Somali, queer muldisciplinary artisted based in Liverpool, her work is mainly concerned with addressing the intersections of race, gender, sexuality and self care. Kiara has created ‘Founding Mother’ placing herself as the future queer foremother, reversing generational trauma passed down through her family, starting the healing process and paving a brighter future for her children.

The poem to compliment the archival film footage has been written in the traditional style of Somali poetry, translated from Swahili to English. This piece supplies the important message that utopia isn’t as out of reach as we may think, it can be achieved by the actions we make and paths we create for our future generations.
