Rachel Rigby

Drawn to a monochrome aesthetic Rachel negotiates a balance of light and dark, using photography and video to explore identity through unconventional portraits, movement and play. In 2017 Rachel took part in Eastside International's Artist residency (Los Angeles), which propelled her practice into the realm of digital performance art, using interpretive dance to create video and a series of stills depicting moments of flight.

Rachel’s ongoing collaboration with drag artist Marilynn Baby documents a range of sculptural work and a personal journey into physical performance.

Rachel recommends Cindy Sherman whose “work in front of and behind the camera creates a series of stills depicting characters and scenes in the style of film noir. The narrative potency of these images resonate with me, the information left out of frame and the potential for personal interpretation.”

“I don't think in terms of a full narrative, maybe I make up a little scenario around whatever has happened at that moment but I have never gone further than putting things together and making it really sequential.”
